Getting Lost In The World's Largest Corn Maze
With the weather being so warm and pleasant in sunny California the past couple months, I had forgotten that it's already Autumn. In Dixon, California, lies a corn maze that currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest in the world. Featuring a new design every year, they're open for a couple months from September to the end of October. In the spirit of Halloween, a couple friends and I decided to be flannel triplets and head off explore the corn maze. Despite being fairly close by, two of us have actually never been to that corn maze before!
If case anyone is wondering just how MASSIVE it is, here is a picture from their Facebook page:
We arrived in the early afternoon, when temperatures were mid 80's, at its daily peak. We grabbed our bags, paid our entrance fees ($12), grabbed our map, plotted out our route, and made our way into the maze. There is an intermediate route and an expert route. We did expert :)
As you might have seen from the aerial picture earlier, there are 4 rest stations inside the maze where you can get up to a higher vantage point to overlook the corn. The intermediate route takes you through 2 of the stations, while the advanced route takes you through all of them. We took photography and water breaks at each one.

My friend is actually terrified of heights and was about to start hyperventilating when I took this shot:
Taking turns leading through the maze, we found the first 2 stations all right, stopping only to take a few pictures of the fuzzy caterpillars we found. Then, we got little lost getting to the 3rd stop. A lot of people who've gotten lost in the maze took it upon themselves to push through the corn and had made separate paths that could pass as part of the maze. That's probably how we got lost. That, and one of our friends also oriented the map the wrong way when she was leading. But, no worries! We found our way eventually -- even though we did end up taking a few shortcuts.
And then we made it out! We didn't time ourselves, but I'm guessing it took us around 2 hours or so. The sun was starting to set. Like kids, we grabbed a wagon and toured the pumpkin patch.

My friend's favorite holiday is Halloween, though you really can't tell from this picture:
We ended the day at the gigantic haystack, basking in the sunset. What an afternoon. Though many people suggested visiting the maze at night (I had wanted to go at night as well), I'm glad we went during the day when it was hotter out. We had the whole place to ourselves! We passed by a grand total of 5 people during our walk, and the weather cooled down quite quickly when we were shaded. As we were leaving, there were quite a few big groups making their way in.
We even managed to catch the rising full moon from the parking lot, which looked AMAZING... but none of us managed to get a shot. We worked such an appetite from walking so much, we went and gorged on ribs afterwards. Great day, great maze. I'll probably try to visit again next year, hopefully in the dark.
